About the event
HISTORY OLD STRUTT SCHOOL
The school was built 1907–09, commissioned by George Herbert Strutt - a direct descendent of Jedediah Strutt, the famous industrialist who developed the cotton industry in Belper. Herbert Strutt, was given the go-ahead to provide a school for the town in March 1907, and the site he chose for the new school was opposite the town‘s workhouse, Babington House. The school was designed by local architects, Hunter and Woodhouse, in a style that would complement this older building. The school is now a grade II listed building. The school closed in 2008 due to £1.5 million needed in repairs and maintenance. The building is now used as a community centre which holds many classes, and has even conducted a wedding and a funeral.
British actors Alan Bates and Timothy Dalton both attended the school.
During the second World War, the school housed hundreds of evacuee children.
A piano has been heard playing on its own. Screams and shouting heard. Female whispers heard and shadow figures seen. People have reported the feeling of being watched and drops in temperature experienced. Furniture and objects have been seen moving on their own and doors slamming shut and locking on their own. Resident ghosts include that of a former female teacher and children.
