About the event
THE BUNKER HISTORY
The bunker starting with it's role as an RAF ROTOR Station, then a brief period as a civil defence centre through to it's most recent life as a Regional Government HQ. Designed for up to 600 military and civilian personnel, possibly even the Prime Minister, their collective task being to organise the survival of the population in the awful aftermath of a nuclear war.
The Bunker had three main lives. Initially as an RAF ROTOR Station and latterly a Regional Government Headquarters, with a brief period in the 1960’s as a civil defence centre. There were also spare bunk beds in the tunnel, to help accommodate some of the hundreds of civilian and military personnel that would be stationed here in time of nuclear attack. The bunker was built on land requisitioned from the local farmer J.A.Parrish.
Paradoxically as the heat of the Cold War died down, the bunker and it’s ancillary systems were no longer required by the Government, and were costing up to 3 million pounds a year to keep on standby. Upon decommissioning in 1992 the bunker was bought back from the government by the Parrish family, at a closed bid public auction, and hence is now privately owned.
The bunker is built 125 feet (38 m) underground and the entrance is through an ordinary-looking bungalow (a standard ROTOR 'Guard House') set amongst trees. The inside of the bungalow leads to a 100-yard-long (91 m) tunnel entering the R4 at its lowest floor (of three). Above are two more floors, the 'hill' which covers it, and a radio mast some distance away.
Paranormal InvestigationsThe paranormal activity at Kelvedon Hatch has not gone unnoticed by enthusiasts and investigators. In 2009, the cast and crew of the popular paranormal reality TV show Most Haunted delved into the bunker's mysteries, leaving with compelling findings. Great British Ghosts, too, ventured into the depths of Kelvedon Hatch, seeking to capture the essence of the supernatural occurrences within its walls. These investigations only serve to deepen the allure and mystique surrounding this Cold War relic, where the echoes of the past persist in both history and ghostly apparitions. Within the confines of the Kelvedon Hatch Secret Nuclear Bunker, the echoes of history intertwine with spectral apparitions, creating an atmosphere steeped in mystery and the unexplained.
