In and around 1866 the "talking board" became popular amongst Spiritualist, and used as another means to contact the deseased (used way before as automatic writing). In 1890 Elijah Bond commercialised the board as a parlour game. An Employee of Elijah, William Fuld took over production in 1901 under the name "Ouija". Claims that the name was an Ancient Egyptian word meaning "good luck", but the more widely accepted name meaning is a combination of the French and German words for "yes"
It has been abused by Hollywood because it's mechanics are not understood, therefore wide open to misinterpretation and sensationalism.
The planchette moves one of two ways.
1. Being pushed knowingly by a charlatan. 2. Being pushed unknowingly by a sensitive/medium.
Example of board designed by our very own John, specifically engineered to confound the serial pusher.
