About the event

HISTORY OF WHITWORTH INSTITUTE

Both Whitworth Hall and Park are steeped in Victorian industrial  history. Lady Louisa Whitworth, wife of the industrialist Sir Joseph  Whitworth, had a vision of creating a place where people could meet for  leisure, recreational and educational purposes. The venue is unique in  that it is the only surviving Whitworth foundation that continues to  operate under the terms of its original endowment. The Whitworth is a magnificent grade two listed Victorian-gothic  architectural gem situated alongside the A6 halfway between Matlock and  Bakewell. The Whitworth consists of a variety of beautifully preserved  rooms each which contain fascinating original features dating back 130 years. The Whitworth is the location of the oldest heated swimming pool in  the UK. Whilst the pool is no longer in use, the room is still used to  host a wide variety of sports and events.

The venue is also home to one of the oldest Billiards Clubs in the world.

WHITWORTH DURING THE WAR

In 1915 part of Whitworth Institute was taken over by the Red Cross to serve as a hospital  and the swimming pool was                   covered over to accommodate patients who were returning from the front in ever increasing numbers. The unit was run by Dr. William Cecil Sharpe and Dr. Marie Orme, who were both the Commandants. They were supported by VADs - Voluntary Aid Detachment nurses - who had been trained by the Red Cross and specialised in the care of wounded soldiers.

In the 1939-1945 War, The whitworth became a driver training school for the Royal Army Service Corps.

PARANORMAL ACTIVITY

The ghosts of whitworth Institute come from many eras, some are soliders still waiting to return to the western front. Some are  members of the family that built the hall. There have been reports of soliders crying and nurses being seen. Children playing and residents yet to be discovered.
